The story behind the Odyssey pyjamas
The print on our Odyssey pyjamas for him and her pays homage to the myths and legends surrounding the Italian island of Ponza. According to the legend Ponza is the island of Aeaea in Homer’s Odyssey and the island of Circe. In the story, Circe the goddess of magic is sent by Zeus (the king of the gods) to the small island of Ponza with the task of governing it. Circe possessed the gift of changing men into animals and women into mermaids. After the battle for Troy, Ullyses (the great hero of the story) decides to return to his home. On the way back they hear mermaids singing near the small island of Ponza. The songs are so beautiful that Ulysses and his men are attracted to the island like a magnet. Once on the island, the men of Ullyses are given a festive reception with a large dinner. What they don't know is that Circe's poisoned the food. She gives Ullyses and his men a drink made from Mandrake. It immediately turns Circe's men into swine. Ullyses is spared the same fate. He has received a herb from Zeus named Moly because of this Circe cannot transform him. Despite everything, Ullyses falls in love with circe and decides to stay on the island. Our Odyssey print displays the graphic silhouettes of Circe, Ulysses, the Mandrake and the swine (the men of Ulysses) in a monochrome colour palette. We are very proud to say that the Odyssey print is hand painted by the amazing artist Anna Glover with whom we collaborated to bring this fascinating love story to life.
