This print brings together the two "magic plants" - Mandrake and Moly - which play a major role in the love story between Ulysses and Circe. Mandrake is a plant that is often mentioned in legends and myths. It is also a plant that is accompanied by a lot of superstition especially in the regions around the Mediterranean Sea. According to Greek legends, Mandrake is the plant used for Circe's magic drink, which enabled her to turn men into swine. In addition, Mandrake is known as a veritable aphrodisiac. Although the roots and leaves of the plant are toxic, the plant can be a cure for insomnia if it is administered in the right proportion. In general, the Mandrake symbolizes powers that people must handle with great care. The second plant shown in our print is the Moly. A fabulous herb with magical powers. The plant was given by Zeus (king of the gods) to Ulysses (the hero in Homer's Odyssey) as an antidote to protect him from the attempts of Circe (The goddess of magic) to turn him into a boar. The roots are black and the flowers are as white as milk. The plant is common in the coastal areas around the Mediterranean Sea. Moly has a calming effect on the body when it is taken as a drink. Our Circe’s Garden print is hand painted by the talented artist Anna Glover with who we collaborated in order to bring this story to life.
